You sat more upright, no longer leaning on Steve for comfort. Now that Thor was telling a scary story, you were most intrigued. You clutched your blanket tight to your chest and listened as the God of Thunder began his tale.

“This is a story my mother once told me….long ago on a very night like this,” he said, his voice low and somber. “I personally did not like tales of horror but Loki had grown quite fond of them. So I’d only listen to them for his sake. Now in my world there are things such as Frost Giants and the Dark Elves. However that didn’t mean that was the only way to scare your children into behaving.”

His lips curled up into a grin as he stared into the candle’s light; remembering a distant memory. Thor cleared his throat before speaking once again.

“You Midgardian’s….you have your tale of Nessy, correct?”

“The Lochness Monster?” you cocked your head to the side curiously. “Well yes there’s that creature but it’s just an urban legend.”

“You never know. It could exist,” Clint shrugged.

“Yes, that is true,” Thor nodded.

“Well come on, get to your story already,” Tony persisted.

“Very well then.”

On Asgard, there are many beautiful places to visit that will calm one’s mind. Far from the palace of Asgard, there is a lake that sparkles like crystals underneath the sunlight. The trees sway gently in the soft breeze and there are butterflies of every color of the rainbow. Many have visited this lake before but often times the lake was empty. It was rare to see more than two people visiting it at the same time. This is exactly why two boys thought it’d be most fun to take a visit. They had gone walking to this lake, just to have some simple fun. When they arrived, they began skipping rocks along the shore and attempting to copy the fighting style they had seen the soldiers of their palace do before.

After a while, they grew bored.

“What do you want to do then?” Audun said to his brother Hagen.

“I don’t know. Maybe do some exploring?”

“Alright then.”

The two brothers decided to walk further down along the lake in hopes of finding something that would cure them of their boredom. After stopping for a short while to take a drink, they heard the sound of leaves rustling behind them. The two brothers turned around quickly, small, pocket knives out to strike anyone who meant to cause them harm. They were quite surprised however when instead they saw a white horse approach them. The horse was grand, and large with a beautiful long, white mane. It’s eyes was a strange color of blue but the young boys thought nothing of it.

“Well would you look at that!” Hagen breathed amazed.

“What a remarkable creature!” Audun said excitedly.

The horse now stood in front of them and nuzzled both of their hands with its nose. With a low winnie, the horse moved over and the boys looked to one another, wondering if they should ride it.

“Just ride it around the lake,” Audun shrugged. “Then after I go, we’ll go home. Maybe this horse escaped from the palace.”

“Perhaps,” Hagan shrugged. “Very well then! I shall give it a try!”

With the help of his brother, Hagan was able to successfully mount the horse. The horse trotted around the other brother and further down the lake and back. Hagan was laughing and had a smile of joy the entire time. Audun stood by and watched as his brother became entertained again. All was going well but then the horse trotted into the lake.

“Wait. What is it doing?” Hagan said confused. “Audun?”

“Uh...I don’t know,” he shook his head, equally puzzled.

He jogged over to the two of them to see what was amiss. Even after Hagan wrapped his arms around the horses neck and attempted to pull him back to the shore, the horse wouldn’t listen and continued to walk further into the lake until Hagan was more than waist deep in water. He began to panic and so did Audun.

Hagan had not learned how to swim yet.

“Audun, help!” cried Hagan.

He thrashed about in the water and during his drowning, the horse had transformed into a strange creature. It took on the body of a man but its skin became a grayish color that looked almost plastic. Its once beautiful white hair turned charcoal black and was covered in twigs and plant leaves. Its blue eyes turned brighter and the black rims around them became thinner. Its lips were thin and pulled up into a twisted smile that revealed its jagged sharp teeth. Audun had began to run into the water. His heart was pounding and he could feel fear seep into his body as the creature clawed at his brother who was drowning. Hagan tried multiple times to resurface only to be pushed back down once again. When Audun was waist deep, he dived in and swam over the ghastly creature who was still clawing at Hagans body.

“Audun!” Hagan gurgled underwater.

Audun reached for the sharp iron necklace that he wore and yanked it off before stabbing the creature multiple times with it. The creature let out a high pitched blood curdling shriek. It oozed black blood and the wounds where it had been stabbed looked like burn marks. The creature swam away, leaving nothing behind but a cloudy trail of black.

Audun wrapped his arms around his brother and dragged him all the way back to shore. Once Hagan was alive and well, they both ran back to the palace.

“Well I won’t be going swimming for a long while now,” you sighed.

You leaned back against the couch and reimagined the story that Thor had just told you. A creature like that would certainly terrify you. Especially one that could shapeshift like that. Nothing is scarier than not knowing who your enemy is and what it is disguised as.

“That was actually pretty good, Thor,” Tony smiled.

“Hey guys. Where’s Nat?” Clint asked.

“She’s still upstairs?” you said confused. “That’s….weird.”

“RAHHHHHH!”

You screamed on the top of your lungs as someone clamped their hands down on your shoulders and their nails dug into your flesh. It made the other Avengers scream in fear and it was only when you heard a certain female laugh that you thought you were going to murder someone.

“Natasha!” you yelled. “You scared the shit out of me!”

“Sorry, (Name). I just couldn’t resist,” she snickered. She made her way back over to her seat on the couch and her grin broadened when she saw Steve with a hand over his racing heart. “You guys can relax though. There’s no one upstairs. It was probably just our imaginations.”

“Oh yippee, I’m going crazy,” you deadpanned.

“Join the club,” Tony mused.

“Well after almost shitting my pants,” Clint began. “I think I’ll go next. I know a story that’s a little dark but well, it’s something.”

“Alright,” Steve said, snapping out of his traumatized state. “Just get on with it.”

Ooooh, are the stories evolved around urban legends? That's really cool!!
